Biomedicine-focused meeting convenes in Pudong
A biomedicine industry report meeting was recently held in Shanghai's Pudong New Area with the participation of more than 200 experts from the city's medical and pharmaceutical companies, research institutes, and government departments, the Pudong Times reported on May 15.
Sponsors of the event included the Zhangjiang Makers Alliance Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Center and the Shanghai Biopharmaceutics Industry Association.
Chen Shaoxiong, executive president of the association, gave a speech on the development of the biopharmaceutics industry in the context of comprehensive health.
Chen pointed out several factors that are accelerating the development of China's comprehensive health and biomedicine industry. For instance, the aging of the population and environmental pollution increase citizens' needs for health services and medical treatment. Citizens are also increasing healthcare expenditures due to their growing awareness of health.
Chen also mentioned the bright prospects of China's biomedicine industry thanks to the country's strong support. Breakthroughs have been made in sectors such as new drug R&D, smart manufacturing, precision medicine and some new treatment technologies.
Currently, a great number of biomedicine industrial clusters have been formed worldwide but mainly in the United States, Europe, Japan, India and China. Biopharmaceuticals have been widely used in the treatment of cancer, diabetes, and chronic diseases.
