Atlatl, the world's largest shared Class A biological laboratory, has opened in Zhangjiang Pharma Valley, Shanghai.
Located in the former top research center of Dow Corning in Pudong New Area, Atlatl applies a shared mechanism of space and management as well as integrated operations and infrastructure to enhance efficiencies in resource utilization, reduce research and development cost—especially in the start-up phase—thus lowering operational risks and generating greater returns.
Atlatl will take advantage of advanced IoT technologies and Artificial Intelligence to improve efficiency and safety to be the world's first biological laboratory equipped with AI-based management.
The company, which comes from a Nahuatl word that means "spear-thrower" (a tool that enables hunters to throw farther and faster) aims to build an ecosystem for boosting China's biomedical innovation.
A Class A lab is an American standard given to the best R&D facilities. There are high requirements on the architecture, with decorating expenses generally over $300 per square foot (approximately 20,000 yuan per square meter).
These labs provide a comfortable, secure and efficient environment for researchers. Major multinational pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson operate under such standards.
High-performance air conditioning and purifying system guarantee the air inside the lab is clean and maintained at a suitable temperature and humidity. [Photo/WeChat account: zhangjiangfabu]
