Construction plan of Zhangjiang Lab unveiled
The construction plan of Zhangjiang Lab, a new comprehensive research base in Shanghai, was unveiled at a technology and intellectual property work conference on Dec 25.
The lab, a joint project between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shanghai government, is designed to be an interdisciplinary, comprehensive and multinational research base, tackling key scientific research projects.
According to the plan, the focuses of the lab are summarized as "1+2+1". The first "1" refers to a large-scale research facility complex constituting of the Superintense-Ultrafast Lasers Facility, Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the Soft X-ray Free Electron Laser Facility, Live Cell Structural and Functional Imaging Facility, Hard X-ray Free Electron Laser Facility, and others.
The "2" refers to integrated circuit (IC) and life science. Zhangjiang has taken the lead in China's IC industry and has formed a complete industrial chain integrating design, manufacturing, testing, packaging, materials and technical services. By the end of 2016, Zhangjiang's IC revenue totaled 61.89 billion yuan ($9.41 billion), accounting for 58.8 percent of Shanghai's total IC revenue.
Life science is also one of Shanghai's strengths. Zhangjiang's photon scientific facilities will greatly contribute to the life science research.
The last "1" signifies brain-like intelligence, an interdisciplinary field of information technology and brain science. Shanghai has already selected brain science and brain-like intelligence to be its key science research projects, of which the core task is the R&D of artificial intelligence chips.
Zhangjiang, located in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, has developed from a rural area into China's leading science city over the past 25 years. It received the approval from the State Council as a national innovation demonstration zone in 2011, marking its move to a new development stage.
